Section 04 / 06 · Cloud Infrastructure
Cloud infrastructure you can rebuild, explain and afford
If a server can't be rebuilt from code and a backup, it's a single point of failure with a monthly invoice. Cloud consoles make it easy to click together infrastructure that works on day one and nobody understands by month six. That's where a lot of outages and surprise bills come from.
We cover infrastructure as code with tools like Terraform and OpenTofu, managed hosting versus self-managed servers, DNS and certificate management, backup and restore testing, region choices, and the cost controls that stop a test environment from running all quarter.
Readers here range from agencies choosing hosting for client sites to teams running production on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. The advice scales down as well as up. A small business site needs the same answers about backups, DNS ownership and recovery time as a platform team does, just with fewer moving parts.
